Agricultural & Life Sciences, College of
The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) is the home of scientific discovery and innovation in food and agricultural production, biosciences, health and wellness, environmental sciences, economics, science communication, and social sciences. Arts, Division of the
Arts on Campus is a great resource to learn about the arts in all forms at UW–Madison. This web portal provides links to all the arts-related academic departments, and outlines degree and certificate offerings. In addition, Arts on Campus promotes a wide range of events, programs, and ways you can get involved with the arts at UW as a participant or audience member, regardless of your major. The Resources tab gives you virtual access to galleries, performance spaces, and public art. We also share calls for artists and funding opportunities.
Arts on Campus is a program of the Division of the Arts, which reports to the Office of the Provost. The Division also manages various arts programs including the semester-long Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program and supports The Studio Creative Arts Community.

Art Department
The UW–Madison Art Department is a national leader in the cultivation and production of creative expression and the visual arts. Did you know there are over 30 bioscience majors at UW–Madison? Career Exploration Center (CEC)
The Career Exploration Center (CEC) helps undergraduate students with the process of exploring majors and careers. When you arrive to campus, you may feel unsure about what to major in or what type of career would be best for you, and that’s where the CEC can help! In the CEC, we support undecided and exploring students to make decisions about their futures based on their interests, values, and skills. As an undergraduate, we’ll work with you to help plan your next steps in major and career exploration through individual career advising appointments and workshops! Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)
The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) provides an enriching, inclusive community and academic support for College of Letters & Science (L&S) students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education, including first-generation and low-income students, and students of color. CAE offers a variety of engagement opportunities, including high-touch advising, tutoring programs, health and wellness events, social events, graduate school preparation, and connections with high impact life changing opportunities.

Child Care and Family Resources. Office of
The Office of Child Care and Family Resources offers support for student parents enrolled at UW-Madison. Our services include financial assistance for childcare, webinars and consultations by top parenting consultants, newsletters, and a mailing list to keep parents informed on relevant topics. Although financial assistance is only available to student parents, UW faculty and staff have access to many of these resources as well.
Computer Sciences, Department of
The Department of Computer Sciences (CS) offers a dynamic environment for study, research and professional growth. Wisconsin CS is recognized as having the world’s leading research groups in computer architecture, database systems, distributed and grid computing, and nonlinear optimization, among others. Credit Evaluation Services
The Office of the Registrar’s Credit Evaluation Services team is responsible for evaluating and posting credit for coursework taken prior to, and while, attending UW-Madison. This includes college-level coursework and credit by exam (AP/IB/A-Levels). To help you make timely progress towards your degree, the team works to identify the type of credit that can be awarded for your work. The credits you have earned can be posted as equivalent or elective credits that can work towards general education or degree requirements. Our team is here to help answer any questions you may have regarding how your credits may transfer. However, we are not an academic advising unit and cannot advise on how these credits may apply towards a degree at UW-Madison.
Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS)
Over 2,000 incoming students begin their college career by exploring majors with Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS). If you are still deciding on an academic major – fantastic! Testing and evaluating your interests is part of the college experience, and our campus is a great place to explore majors and career paths. CCAS is the largest advising office on campus with a community of professional advisors who serve exploring and undecided students. Our advisors are knowledgeable about all of the majors and programs offered through the 8 undergraduate schools and colleges on campus. On average, students who work with CCAS graduate as fast as, or faster than, their peers. We’re dedicated to helping YOU find the academic path that best suits your interests, abilities, and goals.

Dance, Department of
The dance department offers a wide range of courses for majors and nonmajors to study the art and science of human movement. An undergraduate major in dance is an excellent means of gaining in-depth knowledge of the art form and its related fields. Financial Aid, Office of Student
The Office of Student Financial Aid helps students learn about funding sources, such as grants, loans, work-study, scholarships, and part-time employment. The office receives the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), determines financial aid eligibility, processes/disburses financial aid to student accounts, adjusts offers when needed, and advises students regarding financial aid and money management.

First Wave
The First Wave Hip Hop and Urban Arts Learning Community, is a cutting-edge multicultural artistic program for incoming students which offers a four-year full tuition scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Housed in the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI), First Wave brings together young artists and leaders from across the United States and beyond. The First Wave Learning Community offers students the opportunity to live, study and create together in a close-knit, dynamic campus community. First Wave is the first university program in the country centered on urban arts, spoken word and hip-hop culture.
First-Year Interest Group (FIGs)
The award-winning First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs) Program supports students who are entering UW-Madison by providing opportunities to enroll in small-scale seminars that help them meet peers, connect with faculty, and make a successful transition into this large research-intensive university. Every fall, there are more than 60 FIGs available and each one is limited to only 20 students who enroll in a common cluster of courses that are connected by a common theme. All FIG courses count toward graduation and many fulfill general education or program-specific requirements. Each FIG is anchored by a small seminar taught by an instructor who engages them in an interdisciplinary exploration of the FIG topic. Some FIGs are designed for students interested in specific majors, schools or colleges, while others allow students to explore topics and courses that are applicable to many different potential majors.
Gender & Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC)
The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC or CC) serves and supports LGBTQ+ students and their communities 🏳️🌈 . The GSCC offers groups, program series, a peer mentor program, courses, trainings, a library, reservable space, a student org council (15+ orgs), discord server, LGBTQ+ faculty/staff directory, and more to make sure you get connected. Check out the GSCC for help with name policies, restroom policies, gender inclusive housing, trans health care, bias reporting, and anything else you need while you’re at UW. Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS)
The Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS) is a student-run tutoring service that provides academic, language, and study skill support services taught and facilitated by students, for all UW-Madison students. We have eight programs and all of our services are free and easy to register for. Tutoring for GUTS involves low time commitments and flexible hours, and it also allows you to build your resume through volunteering, improve your knowledge of teaching, learning, and studying techniques, and improve your leadership and communication skills.

The University Residence Halls at UW-Madison are more than just “dorms” or places to sleep. They’re an environment built for your success. We offer 21 residence halls and 11 learning communities spread across two distinct neighborhoods – lakeshore and southeast. The Office of Inclusion Education was formed in August 2020 to elevate and prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion for all students at UW. We offer a broad array of learning opportunities for students that contribute to their Wisconsin Experience. The Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) assists students in intentionally connecting with the far ranging opportunities that exist throughout campus, including student organizations, which the center registers over 1000+ each year. McBurney Disability Resource Center
Disability Resource Center is the office for students with disabilities and classroom accommodations on the UW-Madison campus. We work with UW-Madison students with physical, learning, hearing, vision, psychological, health and other disabilities substantially affecting a major life activity (e.g., walking, communicating, learning, seeing, breathing, reading, etc.). As part of the student accommodation process, we work collaboratively with students and instructors to provide and support effective student accommodations. Our vision is a universally accessible educational community that fosters the full participation and contribution of every member, with individual accommodation needed only in unique or uncommon situations.
Morgridge Center for Public Service
The Morgridge Center for Public Service aims to bridge the UW campus and the Madison community through service, service-learning, and community-based research. The MCPS offers a wide variety of volunteer programs, such as Badger Volunteers, and is at the front of many of the University’s voting efforts. The Morgridge Center also provides students with resources, such as Peer Advisors, and opportunities, like the Wisconsin Idea Fellowship.
Multicultural Student Center (MSC)
The primary mission of the Multicultural Student Center is to collaboratively strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus where all students, particularly students of color and other historically underserved students, can realize an authentic Wisconsin Experience. Identity based centers are also located within the MSC including the Black Cultural Center, the Latinx Cultural Center, and the APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) Student Center. The MSC works closely with more than 60 multicultural student organizations and their leaders.
Music, School of
To attend the Mead Witter School of Music is to join a community of engaged and engaging musicians, scholars and teachers. Since its beginning in 1895, the School of Music – renamed the Mead Witter School of Music in 2016 — has lived out a commitment to a rigorous, student-centered musical education. As one of the largest departments within the College of Letters & Science, the School of Music offers flexible programs with innovative and global approaches to music study. Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies
As a world leader in addressing environmental challenges, the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison aims to provide students with a course of study that will make them informed citizens and empower them to become the next generation of environmental leaders. Our unique, interdisciplinary program helps students to link environmental studies with policy, literature, art, philosophy, natural science, and other fields of study. We do this by offering a joint major, which means that the Environmental Studies major within the College of Letters and Science can only be earned if the student is enrolled in and completes another major. This structure exposes students to a broad range of environmental thinking while helping students to see their other major’s courses through a different lens. Environmental Studies majors build a resumé that showcases their wide, interdisciplinary skillset.
Nursing, School of
The University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Nursing is the leading nursing research institution in Wisconsin and a crucial part of the state’s health care system. Situated in the health sciences sector of campus, the School of Nursing collaborates with scientists and renowned researchers across the UW–Madison campus, the nation, and the world.
Translational in nature and grounded in practical application, research at the School of Nursing has an immediate impact on Wisconsin’s communities, hospitals, clinics, schools, and homes.
The school has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students and offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) degrees, as well as continuing education and four certificate programs.

The Parent and Family Program is a free resource that connects parents, families, and anyone who supports an undergraduate student to UW-Madison. Pharmacy, School of

Pre-Health Advising, Center for
The Center for Pre-Health Advising (CPHA) helps UW-Madison students and alumni prepare for and apply to professional programs in health care such as medical, physician assistant, dental, and occupational and physical therapy schools. We advise students on health career exploration, health equity, coursework, clinical experience, professional exams (ex. MCAT), and the process of applying to professional health programs. CPHA is dedicated to increasing access and equity in health care through inclusive, ongoing, personalized, and holistic relationships with advisees — wherever you are in the process of discovering your potential to serve others as a health care professional! CPHA is one of UW-Madison’s two Pre-Professional Advising resources and is co-located with the Center for Pre-Law Advising (CPLA).
Recreation & Wellbeing
At Recreation & Wellbeing, we move Badgers to play hard, get fit, and live well. More than 75% of UW-Madison students utilize our programs, services, and facilities and 1 in 5 students plays an intramural sport.
Whether you’ve never stepped foot in a gym before or you’re a lifelong competitive athlete, we help students build healthy habits. ROTC, Air Force
Offered at more than 1,100 colleges and universities across the country, Air Force ROTC develops the leaders of tomorrow by preparing students to become officers in the United States Air Force and the United States Space Force while earning a college degree. In AFROTC, you will not only build lifelong friendships, but you may also have the opportunity to pay for school through our scholarship programs. Most importantly, unlike many other college students, you will have a rewarding career waiting for you after graduation. Safe Walk
SAFEwalk is a free, student-staffed walking companionship service available to all students, faculty, staff, and UW visitors. SAFEwalkers can accompany you throughout campus and to/from near-campus locations. Call or text (608) 262-5000 to request a SAFEwalk. Service is available nightly until 1 a.m.
Students work in two-person teams throughout campus to:
- Respond to requests for walks.
- Watch for suspicious situations around campus.
- Answer transportation/safety-related questions.
Hours are 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. from October 1 – March 31 and 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. from April 1 – September 30. SAFEwalk is not available on UW legal holidays.
Note: SAFEwalk is following Covid-19 safety measures, including required face masks (exception for approved medical conditions) and physical distancing between group members.

Summer Term - Get an Early Start!
Our early start programs allow incoming students to take classes in the summer before their first fall semester. Early start programs give students a head start on their UW–Madison journey and help make a smooth academic transition to college.
Wisconsin Experience Summer Launch
This online program allows incoming first year students to launch their UW–Madison academic careers by choosing from a list of popular courses that fulfill common requirements. Program participants will also establish a network of friends, peers and campus resources they can continue to grow when they arrive on campus in the fall.
Engineering Summer Launch
Engineering Summer Launch programs are an opportunity for Engineering students to take a course and connect with other students in the College of Engineering before fall courses begin. The four week programs are open to all students who have accepted an offer of admission to the UW–Madison College of Engineering for fall 2021
International Student Summer Institute
ISSI helps international students improve their academic English skills and become familiar with UW-Madison. This four week online program is open to International students who have accepted an offer of admission to UW–Madison for fall 2021.
Transfer Early Start Program
Transfer Early Start Program allows incoming transfer students to enroll in classes during the Summer Term. Students will be connected with an advisor and can enroll in any course that begins on or after the start of the 8-week session (the most popular summer session).
CALS QuickStart
CALS QuickStart allows incoming College of Agricultural & Life Sciences (CALS) students to complete their first-year seminar online. Participants will connect with peers, gain early exposure to campus opportunities and resources, and develop a personal academic and career roadmap. In addition to completing their first-year seminar, students have the opportunity to take an additional online summer course selected from a list of popular classes that fulfill common requirements, and may choose to participate in the CALS QuickStart early move-in program.
UW Study Abroad Launch
UW Study Abroad Launch programs are specially designed for incoming first-year students to begin their Wisconsin Experience abroad. If you are an incoming, first-year Badger interested in launching your studies with a global focus, these programs may be right for you!
Theatre and Drama, Department of
The Theatre and Drama department, housed in the School of Education, offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Theatre and Drama, which can be paired as an additional major alongside many other disciplines. We also offer a Certificate in Theatre and Drama, which can be added to any major on campus. The opportunities to participate in Theatre and Drama performances are open to all students, as are most of our entry level courses. We try to provide a holistic view of Theatre, incorporating all aspects of Acting, Directing, Design, and Practical work.

Transfer Transition Program
The Transfer Transition Program works to improve the transfer student experience by providing transition advising, programming, community-building opportunities for all enrolled transfer students. Our Transfer Engagement Center is a space where students can come to do homework, get free coffee or tea, and be in community. We offer a variety of one-time programs for all transfers as well as a semester-long leadership cohort called BadgerCETE for students in their first semester on campus. This small group environment is designed to help you develop leadership skills, explore your identities, make connections with other new students, and plan your future involvement to maximize your Wisconsin Experience. All transfer students receive welcome emails from us and are subscribed to our weekly newsletter during the semester.
Transportation Services and Parking Services
UW-Madison Transportation Services handles the coordination and administration of all transportation-related services for the UW campus community. Some primary functions include the sale and management of parking permits, special event coordination, lot and booth operations, transportation planning, and development of multimodal transportation options. Popular resources and services available from Transportation Services include campus bus service, SAFEwalk, campus “air and repair” bike stations, and the University Bicycle Resource Center.

Wisconsin Honors offers students an array of high-impact learning experiences. Students design their own honors experience – from challenging courses and hands-on activities to faculty mentorship and research opportunities. Wisconsin Honors takes students from experiential learning to deeper understanding and scholarly achievement.
Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH)
As an incoming student, explore applying for scholarships as soon as you apply to the University by using your UW-Madison NetID and password. Applications for incoming undergraduate students typically open in October-November and have deadlines in early February, so don’t wait until you know your admission status to apply! Many UW-Madison scholarships consider students for awards using a holistic framework that may include, but is not limited to, academic achievement, potential contributions, service and leadership, and financial need.
Wisconsin Union
The Wisconsin Union manages the iconic buildings Memorial Union and Union South that make up the campus living room as well as markets and cafes across campus. Among the Wisconsin Union’s spaces is the famous lakefront destination, called the Memorial Union Terrace; an art studio; and an outdoor recreation and education hub. Memorial Union and Union South offer ample space for studying, relaxing and dining. The Union also offers more than 1,000 events throughout the year most of which are created by UW-Madison students, who are part of the Union’s programming board, called the Wisconsin Union Directorate. Writing Center
The Writing Center welcomes you!
Since its start as the Writing Laboratory in 1969, the Writing Center at Madison has helped literally tens of thousands of University of Wisconsin students, both undergraduate and graduate, learn more about writing while helping them successfully complete course papers, theses, dissertations, articles for publication, career materials, and many other forms of writing — in all sorts of academic disciplines. We will work with writers on any kind of writing project, at any stage of the writing process. To provide this help, we offer an extensive range of individual instruction, non-credit workshops, curricular-based writing tutors (Undergraduate Writing Fellows), and instructional materials.
While we normally offer a range of locations across campus, during Spring 2021 all services are being offered virtually.
