What is UW–Madison's test optional policy?
The University of Wisconsin–Madison received authorization from the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents to waive the requirement for applicants to submit an ACT or SAT test score as a part of their application to the university through the spring 2025 term. Including scores from either the ACT or the SAT with your application is optional and you will not be disadvantaged in our evaluation process if you choose to not include these scores for consideration in your application. You can indicate your choice regarding including test scores at the time of application.
What terms will UW–Madison be test optional for?
Students who are applying for admission in spring 2021, fall 2021, spring 2022, fall 2022, spring 2023, fall 2023, spring 2024, fall 2024, and spring 2025 will not be required to submit an ACT or SAT score as part of their application for admission.
How will UW–Madison review applications that do not include a test score?
Our holistic review process considers multiple factors in making admission decisions. A student’s day-to-day performance is the most important information. We consider a student’s grades, the courses they have taken, and the rigor of those courses. The course and grade information is supplemented by essays, a letter of recommendation from an academic source, and other materials provided by the applicant. ACT and SAT scores have always been only one factor in our overall holistic review. If you choose not to have your scores considered, you will not be disadvantaged, as we will continue to review all aspects of the application.
How should I notify UW–Madison of whether or not I want my test score considered? Can I change my mind?
You will indicate whether you want your test scores considered at the time of application. Both the Common Application and the UW System Application allow you to select whether you want your test score(s) included in your application evaluation. Your request at the time of application submission is final.
How do I submit my scores, if I choose to include them?
If you choose to include ACT or SAT test scores with your application, you are encouraged to self-report your test scores.
If you apply via the Common Application, you can submit your scores by self-reporting in the ‘Testing’ section with all applicable test scores, as well as test score-related questions in the UW–Madison ‘Academics’ section, or by self-reporting in your MyUW Student Center (beginning late-September and after your application is received and processed).
If you apply via the UW System Application, you can self-report your scores using your MyUW Student Center (beginning mid-September, and after your application is received and processed).
You may also submit your official scores directly from the testing site. Please note this does have an additional cost and will add 2–4 weeks to the application completion process. Our test code is 4656 for the ACT and 1846 for the SAT. Do not send your results rush (SAT) or priority (ACT); we receive all scores electronically on a daily basis so there is not an advantage to rush or priority delivery.
If you wish to add updated score(s), you can do so by self-reporting in your MyUW Student Center.
To assure that your test score(s) are considered with your application, you must either self-report your scores or have official scores sent from the testing agency, received in our office by our deadlines.
Note: official test scores will be required prior to enrollment for those who wish to have them included in their application evaluation. Incorrect reporting of test scores may result in your admission offer being revoked and scholarship awards being forfeited.
I haven't taken or will not be able to take the SAT or ACT, can I still apply?
Yes, you may apply without an ACT or SAT score.
I already sent my ACT or SAT score or it was included on my transcript, but I don't want it considered. How do I get my score removed?
You will be able to specify if you’d like your scores used in your admission review or not. Even if your scores were already sent, we will honor your decision on the application regarding test scores.
Does UW–Madison accept self-reported test scores?

Are ACT or SAT scores required for scholarship consideration?
ACT/SAT scores are not required for scholarship consideration, however, they may be used in consideration for a scholarship, if provided by the student.
Will ACT/SAT scores be required prior to enrollment?
If you choose to have test scores included in your application, those scores, sent from the testing agency, will be required prior to enrollment.
Even though test scores are not required, is it advisable for me to provide a score if I sat for an exam?
If you believe test scores will further illustrate a particular talent, skill set, or academic aspirations you have for being a Badger, then let us know you want us to review them. Conversely, if you do not want us to consider your scores, or you do not send them, you will not be disadvantaged during the application review process.
Will UW–Madison still require English proficiency scores from certain applicants?
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) score (effective for 2021) unless English was the primary language of instruction in all four years of secondary school (grades 9–12).
Should I only send my best scores?
Students including test scores with their application are encouraged to submit all exam scores. It can be a benefit to see your complete testing history as part of our comprehensive review, and since we will only consider your highest score (by test date), there is nothing to be gained by suppressing scores through Score Choice. However, applicants are free to use the College Board’s Score Choice option for the SAT and/or the similar option offered by ACT. Superscores are not considered in our review.
Does UW–Madison superscore?
No, we do not superscore for the ACT or SAT. We will only consider your highest score (by test date).
Are there any students who are required to provide test scores as part of their application?
We do encourage students who have been homeschooled or graded in a competency-based system to provide scores to give us a better understanding of their mastery in subjects like English and math, however, it is not required.
I received a defer or wait list decision, and I opted to not have scores used. Now I would like to provide scores. How do I do that?
Once you have received an initial decision, you are able to update your file with relevant information, such as updated grades or scores. You may self-report new scores via your MyUW Student Center or by sending your official scores directly from the testing agency.
